Resolving Globular Cluster Formation within a Cosmological Context
We place constraints on the formation redshifts for blue globular clusters (BGCs), independent of the details of hydrodynamics and population III star formation. We argue that BGCs and stellar halos have a common origin and that simulations of 1 Mpc boxes up to z ∼ 10 must resolve BGC formation. We present a proof-of-concept simulation that captures the formation of globular-like star clusters....
متن کاملGlobular cluster formation within the Aquarius simulation
The Aquarius project is a very high-resolution simulation capable of resolving the full mass range of potential globular cluster (GC) formation sites. With a particle mass mp = 1.4 × 104 M , Aquarius yields more than 100 million particles within the virial radius of the central halo which has a mass of 1.8 × 1012 M , similar to that of the Milky Way. With this particle mass, dark matter concent...
متن کاملGlobular cluster formation and evolution in the context of cosmological galaxy assembly: open questions
We discuss some of the key open questions regarding the formation and evolution of globular clusters (GCs) during galaxy formation and assembly within a cosmological framework. The current state of the art for both observations and simulations is described, and we briefly mention directions for future research. The oldest GCs have ages greater than or equal to 12.5 Gyr and formed around the tim...
متن کاملGlobular Cluster Formation
The discovery of young globular clusters in merging galaxies and other environments provides an opportunity to study directly the process of globular cluster formation. Empirically it appears that globular cluster formation occurs preferentially in regions in which star formation occurs at a high rate and efficiency. Further, the interstellar medium in such regions is likely to be at a higher p...
متن کاملGlobular Cluster Formation in the Virgo Cluster
Metal-poor globular clusters (MPGCs) are a unique probe of the early universe, in particular the reionization era. A popular hypothesis is that the observed truncation of MPGC formation is due to reionization. Under this hypothesis, constraining the formation epoch of MPGCs provides a complementary constraint on the epoch of reionization. Moreover, as the earliest reionizing sources first forme...
